Whatever you choose to name them, what remains is that by thinking about them, talking about them, or going as far as writing them down, you are acknowledging that
1) there are a few things about your life that you need to change to make it better, and
2) the change tbat you have recognised as necessary Starts With You.
By setting goals for 2017, or new year resolutions, you have taken the first step to achieving the positive difference that you so desire in your life. You have become aware of what it is that is holding you back, and you have accepted that it is up to you to do what it takes to make your year - your life - be what you want it to be.
But awareness and acknowledgement are just the beginning of a process towards the change that you wan to achieve, and there is a lot more involved than that.
Secondly, it must be very enticing... exciting... interesting... You should be drawn to it without struggle; attracted to it, compelled to get to it.
Just the thought of it should make you smile :)
The third thing about goals is that working towards them should not feel like hard labour, even when the going gets tough. Any number of things can go wrong along the way. Your business partner could drop you unexpectedly at the most awkward time, you could run out of funding for your start-up, your technology could give up on you, you could fall ill, some family problem could come up, you could fail an important exam even though you studied hard, or you could be discouraged by something that just refuses to go according to plan.
If your goal, or your resolution, is compelling enough, you should be able to keep moving towards it regardless of obstacles that you are sure to encounter along the way. If it starts to feel like you can't do it anymore, like it is too much, then maybe it is the wrong goal for you, or the wrong time for it, or you're going about it the wrong way. Go back to the drawing board and review.
That way you will happily do what it takes to reach them, and you will enjoy the process as much as the end result when you eventually get there.
So if you would like to / want to / hope to / wish to / plan to have a better year than last year, go for it. It is up to you to make your year want you want it to be.
